This car is represents all my boyhood car lust. My pop a true “car guy” used to take me to all our local auto shows in upstate NY. While it was far from a car mecca the local shows had none of the pretentiousness of the big national shows, and only at such a mis organized small town event could you see a 930 turbo slantnose, a Hemi ‘cuda and a Detomaso Pantera all parked in a row. Can you imagine 3 more awesome yet more different cars? As my little kid heart raced for all three cars but the sound of that Detomaso burned a memory into my soul.
For those who don’t know the Detomaso Pantera was the byproduct of an Argentina Born Italian race car driver Alejandro De Tomaso. He brought all the fire and passion of the Italian aesthetic together with Ford Mustang v8 Power. As more and more people are taking cars to the track there are more manufacturers making track day cars. The two front row contenders are the Ariel Atom and the yet to be released KTM X-Bow. The video above shows the X-bow turning track laps and is sure to get your glands salivating. KTM is a motorcycle company now making adult go karts powered by an Audi TSFI 2.0l motor putting out 220hp. Now in a package that mere mortals can afford you can get an F1 Style Carbon Fibre Monocoque frame with a weight predicted to be around 1500lbs. This car is is one of my favorites of all time. Purpose built as a hard edged track ready car embodying the best mechanical engineering in the business. This car makes 415hp out of a naturally aspirated flat 3.6 liter at 7600RPM and is stripped down to 3,238 pounds. Over 100hp per liter of high revvvvving goodness rocketing this car from 0-60 in only 3.9seconds. Add that to puling 1.09g on the skid pad and braking from 60 mph in only 102 feet. To top it I think Porsche engineers may have called in Jesus, Buddha, and Joseph Smith, to use their divine powers to take a regular GT3 and turn it into a GT3 RS the near perfect race ready car.
I am not totally sold on the new M3 , a lot of the early road tests say it is not quite as hard edged as the outgoing model. Turn this clip up and listen to that V8 and decide for yourself. It could be one sweet ride if you are ready to pay over sticker to be the first kid on the block to have one
